The Developer of Project Dogwaffle, Dan Ritchie (pdhowler.com),
has gone through some rough times lately, especially since the
theft of his laptop earlier this year. Some code was lost. It
has taken a while to get back to development. It's also not the
first time this happened. A big tahnk you (!) to all that have
occasionally supported him through donations, a slice of pizza
or membership at his Patreon page and other ways.
Rather than trying to re-create the lost code, he's been
focusing on extra features added as plugins, and filters in the
form of scripts (VBscripts supports the new API that's been
developed for a few recent years).
Some of the code is created with the help of AI, such as with
Microsoft's Bing Copilot. It works and gets us there faster. You
may have seen some Galaxy
filters in recent past. There's more, much more.
Announcing PD Howler 2025
We have a new major release
packaging, released as the first available PD Howler 2025. The
code base is the last (build 91) of Howler 2024, and then there
are added plugins and filters, and Dan is continuing to develop
them and new ones.
There
will be more, you might want to bookmark these.
Is it time to treat yourself for Labor
Day? Don't delay. Be an early adopter and help shape the future
of PD Howler.
Here's a brief summary of a few key new
features:
LiquidFX mesh tool.
Pinch, punch, and push your pixels around like liquid.
Advanced Feature Removal tool.
Uses a technique similar to Poisson blending to remove
features and replace the underlying texture with a new one.
Advanced Chromakey tool. Allows multiple samples instead of just one color to fine
tune your key. Green spill suppression option. Great tool to
isolate objects from the background in many cases that would
have been more difficult in the past, especially if you have
uneven lighting on your green backdrop,
Halftone gradient. Create a gradient between 2 colors using a halftone
pattern to blend between them. Can also be (ab)used for
strannge new elevation maps in weird 3D landscapes.
Canny Edge Detection(!) New type of edge
detection, creates great outline illustrations in many
cases. If you're creating line art for example to make
coloring books, this should be awesome.
New text tools: Still evolving, details tbd, might include edge outline
size, drop-shadow, gradient, Auto-correct. We might also get
some other text tools such as text on curve, Bezier, 3D warp,
or some other kind of warp, or maybe some animated text of
some kind. This one is continuing to undergo new features.
It's almost a tool by itself now. You can save to vector
format and use in other tools even inside Howler, look for
Callouts, or use it in other apps? Stay tuned for more on
this.
Check the web page version online for more examples to come.
Thank you and have a great Labor Day weekend!
