The goal of this tutorial is to introduce you to a few essential tools that will allow you to create something like this:

You will use tools like these:

- filled rectangle
- color gradient
- paper texture
- alpha channel: smooth, adjust, grow, subtract

and others.

Getting started

Click the rectangle tool. Note that this tool has two modes. Be sure to click the rectangle tool in its lower-right area to select the filled rectangle mode.

There are several associated tools you should be aware of. Some of these become visible in PD Pro 4.x inside the toolbar below the menu bar, after you select the filled rectangle tool.

These include:

- the Fill settings panel
- the Gradient panel
- and the Paper panel

All of these can affect the way that a filled rectangle is being rendered. There's also the Opacity (a slider) and the fill mode. By default, it will replace the colors. But it could be set to add, subtract, multiply, etc...

Opening the Assistant Panels

You can also access these panels from the Window menu.

For this tutorial, open all them them and lay them out in an easy-to-access position.

The Fill panel is perhaps the most important one. It lets you choose whether to fill with a plain color (such as the current primary color), or to use the color gradient. You can also indicate which direction the color gradient should fill (horizontal or vertical, for example).

Note that the paper panel can also be enabled by right-clicking the paper icon, top row, middle large icon in the Tools panel. If the little orange triangle is showing in its upper left corner, it means that the paper texture is enabled.

Let's initially disable the paper texture.

Here's a way to lay out the tool panels, to access them as needed:
