Since version 3.5 of PD Pro, there's a new feature in the Optipustics (particles) brush system. It's an image-based Force Fields.

Animated Particles with Forcefield in action:
 

You can of course still use particles across animated background frames, and now they can produce even more dramatic effects, especially seemingly uncontrollable forces can appear to be affecting the path of the particles.

You can also use simple greyscale shaded 3D images to affect where your painting goes. Particles will use the gradient of the image used as the forcefield.
