ESET also puts a lot of value in cybersecurity education, such as www.SecuringOureCity.org and they have the best scanners and detection for unknown threats (zero-day, hitherto unseen, proactive heuristically detected in sandbox etc...). If you use a Mac, then check their Mac product. If you use an Android smartphone (including multi-core systems that rival the compute power of many PCs!), then check ESET. If you're on Linux desktop or server, and are concerned about company-wide security on the network and the endpoints like Buanzo is, then try ESET.
Avira Antivir - www.avira.com - this is what we call solid German Engineering, the free version also has realtime (always on) protection for home users. If you can't afford the full versions above, this might be your best free alternative. With Avira, it's not "Have a nice day!", it's "Guten Tag!" :-)
