Important
Prerequisite
This patch is only for Howler
9.6.
What is the
OBJ exporter?
PD Howler includes a filter
named the 3D Designer. It is found in the
Transform category of the Filter menu. The 3D
Designer can be used, amongst other things, to
create 3D landscapes with terrains.
One of the options from this tool is to save the
resulting terrain as a mesh in a 3D file format
camed Wavefront OBJ. This is a popular format used
by a variety of 3D modeling, animation and
rendering tools, as well as some game engines and
game design tools.
With the OBJ export, you can easily transfer the
landscape terrain into another 3D penvironment.
Why use the
'Improved' OBJ exporter with u,v Vertex
Addresses?
The original exporter that came
from Howler 9.6 did only save the vertex positions
of the mesh. It did not save the u,v addresses
that indicate how to make the texture map to the
mesh. It wasn't deemed necessary at first, since
it is a simple planar projection mapping. Many 3D
tools allow for re-mapping in projections such as
planar mode. So the texture could be re-applied
elsewhere.
However, having the u,v addresses mapped upon
export makes the process easier to use. No
additional mapping is needed. Magic just happens.
The only thing you still need to do is identify
the image file that represents the texture. That
one typically would have to be exported separately
from PD Howler. It is one asset from 3D Designer
you can also STore, and then Save.
The Wavefront OBJ file can actually include the
reference to the image file too, but since we
don't know when or if you will save it, or use a
different image as the texture, we'll leave that
one out of the export. For now anyway.
How to use
it?
See installation details below.
Once you've applied the patch, you'll use the
export option the same way, but now it will show
an option that is checked by default, so as to
include uv texture addresses in the export. Note
that the file will be larger than when saved
without uv addresses. And it already can be a
fairly large file, as it is clear text readable,
uncompressed ascii.
Here's what the dialog will look like when you
click the OBJ export option in 3D Designer:

How to
Install the patch?
You will need Howler 9.6
installed before applying this patch.
If you have Howler 9.5, contact us for your
free update to 9.6.
This patch is meant to improve the OBJ export
and may add a few other minor fixes or
changes. For example, the Window menu may have
changed to View menu.
Beware: This patch is not distributed
as an installer at this time. You will simply
download a file named dogwaffle.exe,
that is meant to replace the one you currently
have in your Howler 9.6 installation folder.
This is the main file that you lauch PD Howler
from (so it recommended to pay attention).
Note: We recommend that you save a
backup copy of the existing file before
replacing it with this new one, just to make
it easy to revert to the prior version, just
in case.
Note: you can't update the existing
file with the new one if PD Howler is still
running. Be sure to exit any currently running
version of Howler.
Download and save this new version of the
file:
dogwaffle.exe
(Size: 13.8 MB (14,473,216 bytes
exactly))
>>>
Update : a newer update
is available - read about it

Important: Be sure to scan it once more
through your antivirus. Never trust downloaded
files, especially executable .exe files,
even if you trust the poster. After all, if
the site was hacked, it could have been
tampered with. So always be on the safe side,
scan your downloads with a good, up-to-date
antivirus. We do the same, every time, no
exceptions. If you need help with this, don't
hesitate to ask.
Then copy the file into the current Folder
where you have Howler installed. That
location may vary from case to case but the
default location would be something like this:
C:\Programs
Files (x86)\Howler
I'f you're installed through Steam
it could be something like this:
C:\Program
Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\PD
Howler 9.6
After replacing the old dogwaffle.exe with the
new version of the file, you will need to run
it just once as Administrator. Right-click the
newly copied dogwaffle.exe file, and select Run
As Administrator. This is needed
only once to register the file and its
components. In short: to make it work right.
Otherwise you'll get an Error: Unexpected
Error or something like that.
If you experience any problems, revert to the
old dogwaffle.exe and run as Administrator
once again.
